Filk Friday: ROFLMAO!

This is a fun ditty of a parody based on The Muppets song "Mahna Mahna." The lyrics the undead dude is singing are leet-speak words from World of Warcraft. I'll translate below the video. The song itself ends around 2:31; the rest is just the credits and rambly vocals in the background.



ROFLMAO-Rolling on floor laughing my a** off. (most people should know this by now)
PWN-Leet-spelling for "Own" as in "I totally owned that dude." A statement of superiority right after easily beating their opponent in battle.
n00b-New player, usually being derided for some clueless action or question.
UBER L33T HAX-Extremely good elite hack/cheat code. (yes, a double positive, for emphasis)
Pr0n-(I had to look this one up.) A deliberate misspelling of "porn" to get around language filters, sometimes for legitimate purposes in message groups, not just to be perverse.
WTG-Way to go. A standard commendation.
FTW-For the win. Congratulatory or boasting comment.
ROXORZ BOXORZ-(sorry, can't tell you, never seen it before this song)
OMG-Oh my God/gosh (depending on your upbringing)
HAX-A hack or cheat code for something.

September Reading List

Here's my reading list for the month. There are ones I've wanted to read for a while, the few you've suggested, and others pulled from blog reviews. I'm trying to broaden my reading selection. In no particular order:

• Twilight by Stephanie Meyer (because I may as well get this over with, will be used in major post near the end of the month)
• The Mermaid's Madness (Princess novels-book 2) by Jim C. Hines (because I loved The Stepsister Scheme when I read it this summer)

• The Art and Craft of the Short Story (from browsing at the library for something useful to help me write something shorter than a novel)
• How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy by Orson Scott Card (I liked his Characters and Viewpoint book, so I figured I might want to tromp through this one and at least scoop up a few ideas)
• Sin and Syntax: How to Craft Wickedly Effective Prose by Constance Hale (checking it out to see how helpful it is)

I'm sure there are other books I'll pick up this month. I won't post reviews for everything, but I will give everything I've read a rating. Look for my end-of-month tally of what I've read. If there are any books here that I don't get around to reading before the end of the month, they'll get bumped into the top of October's reading list. If there are any other books you want to recommend, you can still suggest them in the comments below.

What to read this September

I'm putting together a list of what I'm going to read this fall and looking for suggestions of science fiction and fantasy books for MG-adult as well as any spectacular reference books. Please give me a little about the book and why you think I should read it. I will be posting my (mostly) completed list on Wednesday. You can still add to it then if you miss posting your suggestions before the list goes up.

A few books I will be including:
Twilight by Stephanie Meyer-not really looking forward to this one, but I have an epic post planned for the end of the month to show how Bella rates compared my favorite female MCs. The faceoff should be a lot of fun. Bring your friends.
Voices of Dragons by Carrie Vaughn-I've had the book all summer and never got around to reading it. It looks really good. And it has dragons. :D
The Mermaid's Madness by Jim C. Hines (book 2 of the Princess Novels)-I loved The Stepsister Scheme. I want to see how the three princesses are going to handle the problems involved in this one.

Filk Friday: Play That Filky Music

From Con On the Cob 2008, here is Play That Filky Music. The sound quality isn't great, but the music is catchy enough that you can still get into the groove. Some fun tributes to various people of SF. It is sung by Power Salad with guest Luke Ski joining in on the chorus.

Filk Friday: Dr. Horrible Firefly Parody: Brand New Day

What do you get when when you cross Dr. Horrible with Firefly? A hilarious parody of course! I am a huge fan of both shows, so when I ran across this video this morning--and laughed really hard the whole way through--I had to share.

As the poster of the video said: "Neil Patrick Harris auditioned for the role of "Simon" on Firefly. What would the show have been like with Dr. Horrible playing that part? Probably something like this." (I agree completely.) Go to the video itself for the lyrics and to find other related parodies.



P.S. And sorry about Wednesday. I didn't get the post finished ahead of time, and that morning I was busy with taking my son to get his immunizations for school before I had to go to work.

Filk Friday: Gamer Funk

I should have played this a few weeks ago while people were heading off to various conventions. But I only found it this morning in a search for something to post while I'm without access to the extensive bookmark list on my laptop. Gamer Funk by Rob Balder is a hilarious number about going to a convention and having trouble with fans who seem to be afraid of baths/showers while there. He's got some great lines in the song.

nothing new

I was planning to either say something more about the SCA tomorrow or talk about my experience with larping or something fun, but I'm just feeling drained. After messing up my power cord for my laptop this afternoon by tripping on it while it was still attached to the laptop, dumping it on the floor--cord side down--so that the prong is bent about 30 degrees now, and then cracking my head on the upper bunk of my son's bed while trying to get up to kiss him goodnight after singing him his bedtime song, I'm not up to giving any of my planned topics the treatment they deserve. I feel more like crying, though whether it is due more to my poor laptop or my head with its knot where I conked it, I don't know. I'm just feeling miserable and I don't want to rush something in the morning before I have to go into work like I have been. I'd rather do something silly with my boy. Kid-cuddles sound really appealing right now.
