Fun video Friday: B5-diets in the future

Just to do something a little different, and because I'm on a Babylon 5 kick at the moment, here is one of my many favorite episodes in which Dr. Franklin gives the rest of the Command staff new diets. Food plans. Whatever. Garibaldi is told to cut back on the fats and salt, Sheridan has to cut back on meats and add more veggies, and Ivanova has to add fats and minerals. As you can guess, none of them are very happy about it. Though it's nearly cut off in the transition between excepts, listen for Franklin's final comment to Ivanova's exasperated metaphor.

Though Babylon 5 has many serious moments and episodes that focus more heavily on the conflict, there are the more ordinary (and humorous) moments like this scattered throughout the five seasons. I love these characters.

Was...was that... "But with very nice borders."

And now I'm getting "the look" from people because I'm giggling. Oh boy. Thanks for that. Have a great weekend.

Hehe Yep, you got it! Glad you enjoyed the clips.

This is from "A Distant Star" episode 4 of season 2. It's just a side plot, but it plays on things that happened in previous episodes. Garibaldi was still recovering from being shot in the back at the end of season 1. And Ivanova had broken her leg in the previous episode when fighting broke out among the Drazi and she got caught in the middle of it. The actress had broken her leg for real, and it got worked into the plot, which I think is very cool.

Ha! Characters in denial about their food intake. Humans are the same everywhere.

I know. That's what makes this such a great show. Okay, one of many things. The ordinary, very human moments, anchor the very science fictiony parts.

I love this show, and it's because of what you mentioned. The humorous, human moments are the ones I remember most, even though everything else about the show was great. Those moments make it more real for me, I connect with characters who are feeling and dealing with some of the same stuff I have, and I care about them and enjoy their stories.

You know, that was one of the few science fiction shows I never watched. Think I was still immersed in Star Trek at the time.
